When several small incisions are made on your abdomen, this is called minimally invasive surgery.

The part of your colon that has the cancer is removed through the incision.

When 1 long incision is made on your abdomen, this is called open surgery.

Depending on what type of surgery you have, your surgeon will make 1 or more incisions (surgical cuts) in your abdomen (belly). Your surgeon will talk with you about which options are right for you. Your surgeon will explain which part of your colon will be removed (see Figure 2).Ī colon resection can be done using different techniques. The healthy ends of your colon are then sewn back together. The part of your colon with the cancer is removed. Colon resectionĬolon resection is a surgery that’s done to treat colon cancer. Your rectum serves as a holding area for the waste until it leaves your body through your anus. The remaining waste enters the end of your colon, known as the rectum. The waste then moves into your colon, where some water is reabsorbed (taken back) into your body. Anything that isn’t absorbed is called waste. There it continues to be digested, and many nutrients are absorbed. When the food leaves your stomach, it moves into your small intestine. These acids start to digest (break down) the food. Once the food enters your stomach, it mixes with stomach acids. Your esophagus is a long, muscular tube that carries food from your mouth into your stomach. The type of surgery offered to patients with this malignancy should be dependent on patient factors and surgeon preference.After you chew and swallow your food, it moves into your esophagus. Lymph node clearance is statistically better but not clinically significant in a formal oncologic resection. LVI, resection margins, mortality, survival, and recurrence are comparable when compared to formal oncologic resection. Conclusion: Segmental splenic flexure resection outcomes are similar to anatomical/oncologic resection, making it a good option for the treatment of splenic flexure carcinoma.

On Cox multivariable analysis, age (HR 1.07 1.04-1.09, p=<0.001), and tumor stage (p=<0.001) were found to be significant factors affecting mortality, as expected.

No difference was identified in overall (p=0.12), 30 day (p=0.27) or 90 day mortality (p=0.32), overall survival (p=0.83), disease free survival (p=0.83) and overall recurrence (p=0.20). Lymphovascular invasion (LVI) and resection margins were comparable but OR had better mean lymph node clearance (17.6 vs 14.7, p=0.0047).

Most tumors overall were stage 2 and moderately differentiated although there was no difference between the two surgical groups. Overall, 88% underwent primary anastomosis whereas 11% required either a colostomy or diverting loop ileostomy. The rest had urgent/emergent surgery for obstruction or perforation. For both groups, 77% of the operations were performed electively. There were no differences in age, gender, or race. Results: A total of 202 patients were found of which 113 underwent SF and 89 OR.
